Verify and evaluate suppliers in China!
In an earlier video, we talked about how to narrow down a list of potential suppliers to a select group of highly qualified candidates.
Now go ahead and contact this short list. This starts the RFQ (request for quotation) phase. The feedback from this initial contact should allow you to further narrow down the list to the top 2 or 3 based on pricing and non-price attributes.
The next step is to validate if the suppliers are legit. In my opinion there are two essential types of verification.
Type One is the Factory Audit. This is to verify that the supplier has a quality control system in place and they have the production experience to supply you with the goods they say they can make for you.
Type Two is an Operational Audit or Due Diligence. This is to confirm that the supplier has a good reputation and is financially strong enough to stay in business long enough to complete your order. In other words, they are not likely to disappear with your initial payment.
There are professional service providers available who conduct these types of verification at very reasonable prices. I highly recommend you engage professional support if you don't have the skill set in-house to audit factories in China on your own. Contact me and I would be happy to recommend the 3rd parties I use for verification. But for your reference, here are some other tools you can use on your own or in conjunction with those 3rd parties.
It doesn't cost you anything to ask for references. If a supplier can't give you a few happy clients to visit with…this is a big red flag.
Confirm that you have the right to visit the production line and check on your order. If they come up with a bunch of excuses why you can't visit, it either means they don't have the ability to produce your product and are scared that you won't like what you see if you visit or it could be as simple as that they are a trading company and worried you will cut them out of the supply chain once you realize they provide little value. Speaking of trading companies, sometimes, especially if your order is small, it makes sense to use them, but I hate trading companies that say they are the factory when really they are just brokers.

URBAN FORAGING WITH THE WOODLAND TRUST
Bakers, cake addicts and foragers are in for a treat this autumn following predictions of a bumper wild fruit harvest. Liam Creedon explains what to pick, and where to pick itIt seems that the never-ending winter and unfeasibly cold spring earlier in the year may have actually proved a blessing for our beleaguered fruiting trees and bushes.
Autumn is now expected to be late and, according to the Woodland Trust who monitor the changing seasons through their Nature's Calendar project, when it does finally arrive, it's predicted to produce a berry bonanza. Hedgerows, woodland edges, parks and gardens should be laden down with plump clusters of blackberries, sloes, elder berries and sweet chestnuts.
Nature's Calendar project manager Dr Kate Lewthwaite explains: "So far we have only had a few sightings of the autumn berries from bramble, rowan and blackthorn. This along with the delayed onset of spring flowering suggests that autumn fruiting will be late this year.
"Autumn fruiting dates vary considerably from year to year as they are affected by temperature and rainfall. If last month's warm weather interspersed with occasional wet spells continues, the fruiting of autumn shrubs should be abundant."The relatively late flowering may have helped avoid any frost damage to flowers, and agate beads. With July 2013 being the third warmest since 1910 and August temperatures being about average with a fair amount of rainfall, we predict a good fruiting crop this autumn."
For the majority of us, autumn foraging consists of scrabbling around in the local bramble patch for blackberries. These encounters typically confirm a universal truth that the plumpest, juiciest berries are always tantalisingly just out of arm's reach.The humble blackberry is more mysterious than we give it credit for with around 400 subspecies, all of varying taste, size and fruiting period. Experts say berries on the tips of stalks are the quickest to ripen and are the sweetest and juiciest. Blackberry jam, pie and ice-cream are the objectives of many cooks and bakers but the berries can be turned to a myriad of purposes - from a jus that goes perfectly with goat's cheese, to a simple addition to a fruit salad.
But would-be foragers should look beyond the blackberry as other fantastic fruits will also be ripe for the picking.Sloes, the hard, dark purple berries of the blackthorn are expected to be plentiful and prove ever-popular as they enable the forager to become tipsy as a result of their endeavours. Sloe gin is made with berries gathered in September and October. The concoction is fantastically easy to make - collect and then prick half a bottle of sloes, sprinkle with sugar and cover with gin. The beverage will be ready by Christmas.
Rowan berries, hanging in clusters like lurid vermilion beads are also well worth seeking out. High in vitamin A and C they make fabulous jellies and jams and their acidity works well with roast lamb or venison. Elder, hazelnuts and sweet chestnuts are also expected to be plentiful and are delicious and easy to identify.
All this bumper harvest is not only good news for gourmands, it also benefits our wildlife as last year's washout conditions resulted in a pitiful fruit harvest.A good autumn fruit crop can mean the difference between life and death for small mammals and birds as they rely on this seasonal glut to lay down fat stores for the approaching lean times of winter.
Dr Lewthwaite explains: "Berries are a vital food supply for a wide range of fruit-eating birds and mammals such as badgers, dormice, hedgehogs and foxes; and birds like blackbirds, bullfinches, chaffinches, magpies, song thrushes and insects including butterflies, wasps and moths."Although they may have to wait, wildlife species will no doubt benefit from a bumper crop, and finally fruit-eating birds and mammals will be able to enjoy an autumn feast.
"The berry harvest is particularly good for hibernating species that need to store enough fat reserves to last through winter. Last year, birds and mammals suffered some of the poorest fruiting crop in years and this, coupled with the prolonged cold snap in spring, meant that many species had to endure a long period without a decent food supply."
Hudson tells about hot days working tobacco, when he thought he’d die from the heat, in “Jack Daniels Kept Me From Jim Beam and Johnnie Walker.” One day, no one brings water to the field where Joe is working, and he ends up sitting next to his friend, who everyone calls Jack Daniels. Now Jack is a large man, and he hangs out with the other workers sipping liquor when they can get it. On this particularly hot day, he lets his little buddy try it, but Joe, thinking it’s iced tea, takes a big gurgle from the Beads factory, setting his mouth, throat and tongue on fire until, a few minutes later, he hasn’t a care in the world. This is the longest story in the book and one that really sets the tone for the hilarity/calamity to follow.
He praises a favorite food in “Oh, Come to Me, My Sweet — Corn,” telling us “From the time I was a small child, corn has always been a source of wonder and delight.” He pooh-poohs all the naysayers — corn is bad for you, corn syrup will kill you, ethanol is useless. He goes off to eat it anyway. With salt and butter.
The book is divided into eight sections, one covering holidays and vacation, one family life, one food, another marriage. He has a lot to say about marriage. And many of the pieces not in the food category mention food. Obviously the way to this man’s heart is through his stomach.
There’s a couple of pointed pieces, too, like “What is Life All About?” In it, he reminisces about the good old days of the 1960s, when all you needed was love and a few beads. Now, he says, the world is full of rage and violence and there’s only one way to get through it: “It will take a little faith to see us through and what else but faith in a loving God can keep you afloat in such corrupt and violent times?” He continues, “Faith still lives due to the endurance of gentleness and the ability to laugh.”

Norman museum gives glimpse of prehistoric
After it spent a few centuries buried in east Oklahoma soil, it's remarkable the Spiro lace exists at all, said Dowd, the museum's registrar. But after a look at the strands of fabric, it's obvious that the artisan who made the lace took pride in the work, she said.
“When you see this piece, it was clearly made by somebody who really knew what they were doing,” she said.Collected from the Spiro Mounds site in Le Flore County, the lace is one of the largest, best-preserved samples archaeologists have found of late prehistoric woven textiles.
The lace is one of the entries listed in the Oklahoma Cultural Heritage Trust's Top 10 Endangered Artifacts. It gives archaeologists a rare glimpse into the kinds of garments people in the late prehistoric period might have worn every day, Dowd said.Located about 15 miles west of Fort Smith, Ark., Spiro Mounds are a collection of earth mounds that were probably built by ancestors of the modern-day Caddo and Wichita tribes, Dowd said. That group lived in the area from about 800-1400 A.D., she said.
Gary McAdams, cultural program planner with the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, said the site includes burial mounds that probably included graves of tribal leaders. The number of artifacts archaeologists found with the human remains led them to believe the people buried there had been important to the tribe, he said.
The site also includes platform mounds with structures on them, McAdams said. Those mounds probably served some ceremonial purpose, he said, but it's difficult to say exactly what that purpose would have been.OU archaeologists found the Spiro lace during an excavation in the 1930s. After looters dug up the site looking for gemstone beads, OU archaeology professor Forrest Clements led an effort to try to salvage what was left.
The artifacts Clements and his team found at the site numbered into the tens of thousands and came from all over North America, Dowd said. Archaeologists found plates from the Great Lakes and Appalachian Mountains, shell cups from the Gulf Coast and shell beads from as far away as California, she said.Because of the number of exotic artifacts, archaeologists originally thought the mound was built to honor a powerful chief, Dowd said. More recently, she said, the more common theory is that the mounds served as a pilgrimage site. Visitors likely came to the site from all over North America in the same way that European pilgrims flocked to pilgrimage sites there during the Middle Ages, she said.
Archaeologists found the Spiro lace in the central chamber of Craig Mound, a burial mound at the site. Woven garments would have been fairly common at the time the lace was made, Dowd said. But unlike other artifacts like clay pots and stone tools, woven goods like baskets and fabric generally don't survive centuries under ground.
The lace probably survived because of relatively dry conditions inside the mound and because it was buried alongside copper plates, Dowd said. The metallic properties of the copper probably helped protect the fabric, she said.Many of the artifacts found at the site are on display at the Sam Noble Museum or at the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. The lace is housed at the museum at OU, and isn't on public display.
Although the lace answers questions about the techniques late prehistoric artisans would have used to create fabric, scientists still don't know everything about it, Dowd said. There's no way to tell whether the lace came from a blanket or a piece of clothing, she said.It's also difficult to say for sure whether the lace was made nearby or if it, like many of the other artifacts found in the mounds, was brought from far away.“We make educated guesses,” she said. “We try to make the best theories we can based on the evidence, but there's always some uncertainty.”

Those mounds probably served some ceremonial purpose, he said, but it's difficult to say exactly what that purpose would have been.OU archaeologists found the Spiro lace during an excavation in the 1930s. After looters dug up the site looking for gemstone beads, OU archaeology professor Forrest Clements led an effort to try to salvage what was left.
The artifacts Clements and his team found at the site numbered into the tens of thousands and came from all over North America, Dowd said. Archaeologists found plates from the Great Lakes and Appalachian Mountains, shell cups from the Gulf Coast and shell beads from as far away as California, she said.Because of the number of exotic artifacts, archaeologists originally thought the mound was built to honor a powerful chief, Dowd said. More recently, she said, the more common theory is that the mounds served as a pilgrimage site. Visitors likely came to the site from all over North America in the same way that European pilgrims flocked to pilgrimage sites there during the Middle Ages, she said.
Archaeologists found the Spiro lace in the central chamber of Craig Mound, a burial mound at the site. Woven garments would have been fairly common at the time the lace was made, Dowd said. But unlike other artifacts like clay pots and stone tools, woven goods like baskets and fabric generally don't survive centuries under ground.
The lace probably survived because of relatively dry conditions inside the mound and because it was buried alongside copper plates, Dowd said. The metallic properties of the copper probably helped protect the fabric, she said.Many of the artifacts found at the site are on display at the Sam Noble Museum or at the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. The lace is housed at the museum at OU, and isn't on public display.
Although the lace answers questions about the techniques late prehistoric artisans would have used to create fabric, scientists still don't know everything about it, Dowd said. There's no way to tell whether the lace came from a blanket or a piece of clothing, she said.It's also difficult to say for sure whether the lace was made nearby or if it, like many of the other artifacts found in the mounds, was brought from far away.“We make educated guesses,” she said. “We try to make the best theories we can based on the evidence, but there's always some uncertainty.”

We fail to see is that our prosperity does not come from what we get from others, our prosperity comes from what we get from God, through others .What we get from God through others, is the result of what we give to God, through others. The way to increase what we get from God through others, is to increase what we give to God through others. No gift is truly given until it is given back to God.

Biology professor receives high honors
The study of amphibians and reptiles. For some, the thought of snakes, frogs and lizards can be repelling, but to Dr. David M. Sever, herpetologist, biology professor and snake lover, it is intriguing.
Just step inside his office, and you’ll notice the large king cobra replica on the corner of his desk, decorated with Mardi Gras beads. This passion and expert knowledge of all things herpetology has paid off, as he has been recognized by the Herpetologist League as the 2013 Distinguished Herpetologist of the Year.
“As a child, I was interested in dinosaurs and you couldn’t find dinosaurs, but you could find these lizards and turquoise beads, things that looked like dinosaurs,” said Sever. “A lot of my acquaintance with [reptiles and amphibians] actually came through Boy Scouts. I’m an eagle scout now, and I worked at a scout camp for five years or so, so I was out there collecting things all the time.”
Sever, a Canton, Ohio native, received his undergraduate and graduate degree from the University of Ohio, then moved on to Tulane University to receive his Ph.D in 1974. Sever taught in the biology department at St. Mary’s College from 1987-2004, and he then moved back down to Louisiana, applied and secured the position as biology Department Head at Southeastern in 2004. This year marks Sever’s 10th year at Southeastern. Currently, he holds the Kenneth Dyson Endowed Professorship. Sever was honored to accept the award.
“It’s a pretty impressive list,” Sever said. “It’s sort of a who’s who of herpetology. They’re recognizing that you’ve had a long and very productive career.”Dr. Stan Trauth, president of the Herpetologist League and biology professor at Arkansas State University, says Sever’s past research projects were the reason he was chosen.
“Early in his studies, Dave’s histological research focused primarily on salamander cloacal anatomy and, specifically, the spermatheca or sperm storage structure in these animals,” said Trauth. “His numerous papers on these structures have dominated the international literature on this subject for decades.”
The former department head has been published in over 100 different scholarly journals. Sever has also been elected to the editorial review board of the Journal of Herpetology and the Journal of Morphology, and in 2011 co-edited “The Reproductive Biology and Phylogeny of Snakes.”
According to Trauth, Sever’s articles have helped herpetologists immensely, mainly because of the amount of detail he puts into his work. Overall, he has published almost 1,000 figures and over 3,000 micrographs in his papers.
“By combining ultra-structural studies along with his histo-chemical and light microscopic analyzes, he has reached countless numbers of researchers through his 140 or China beads,” Trauth said. “What are truly remarkable to me are his 32 papers published in the “Journal of Morphology.” Most of these he first authored, but as a co-author his influence on the writing style, overall figure design and number, and micrograph selection in those articles is unmistakable. A typical Sever paper will have about 2 tables with 8 to10 figures and each figure normally has 3 to 4 light and/or electron micrographs.”
Sever’s most recent research study, titled “Observations on Variation in the Ultrastructure of the Proximal Testicular Ducts of the Ground Skink, Scincella Lateralis,” was published in the Journal of Morphology. The conclusion was “that the ducts are absolutely homologous,” Sever said.
The writing on top of teaching can be hard to manage, but what makes everything worthwhile are Sever’s enthusiastic students, especially the graduate students, says Sever. With them anything is possible.
“A lot are from Louisiana, but we also get them from all over the country, and they’re a pretty carefree group of individuals,” Sever said. “They love to go to Mardi Gras and all the social life we have around here, but they’re also very serious, good students.”
In the future, Sever hopes to continue his teaching and research at Southeastern after his retirement. The main message of the speech he gave after receiving his award was professors can break remarkable ground in herpetology research even without Ph.D level students. A small, intimate school such as Southeastern does not mean one must limit their potential to do substantial, meaningful research.
“One could have a productive career teaching and doing research at an institution that’s primarily an undergraduate facility,” Sever said. “You can involve undergraduate students in your work. Even though you’re at an undergraduate school, you can still get grants. And I tried to encourage graduate students and professors to make the best of the situation.”

Climb into a Victorian ice well to discover
Clamber down the two ladders that lead into the Victorian ice wells of London's Canal Museum until 20 October and you'll be greeted by a shimmering mass of perspex discs suspended from the ceiling. The 380 floating discs that make up Covariance, the art installation current displayed in the wells, are studded with 28,000 glass beads and are arranged into around 20 different designs, representing the work of particle physics detectors.
Particle physicist Ben Still from Queen Mary University London and artist Lyndall Phelps have collaborated on the installation for the Superposition project through the Institute of Physics' artist in residence programme. Covariance has been nine months in the making altogether, including three months of fourteen-hour days to complete its construction.
The pair were introduced by the Institute and given the brief of creating a physics installation for public display. Rather than focusing on one particular area of agate beads, they decided instead to look at the machines that make the science happen -- particle physics detectors.
"These [are] massive machines used to see the smallest bits of nature," Still tells Wired.co.uk. The installation aims to show the way in which the detectors build up a picture of how these tiny particles interact with each other on a larger scale, as well as reflecting the way the electronic data collected by the detectors is then used to create plots on computers.
Still showed Phelps many pictures of particle detectors, which are generally huge and impressive structures, and she "fell in love" with one in particular called Super-Kamiokande, which is buried under Mount Kamioka in Japan.
"I showed her some of the plots I was making for an analysis I was developing and again she was quite struck by how we took data from this massive machine and made these colourful plots to try and extract information." The colour running through the installation, says Still represents "the way in which the data is presented finally".
Many particle physics detectors, especially the ones in neutrino physics -- the field in which Still works -- are buried deep underground to try and negate the impact of the cosmic rays and particles constantly showering down on us, which creates "quite a turbulent environment" on the Earth's surface.
"To see very rare things, you have to get rid of that first, so you have to go deep underground," says Still. "We're trying to hear a faint whisper above a rock concert, so if you go underground the rock concert is muffled so much that you can actually start hearing that whisper coming through, and that's exactly how we're trying to see these neutrinos."
Detectors aren't just buried under the ground, but also under ice and water, making the underground ice wells, which used to store ice and are below the waterline of the canal, the perfect location to host Covariance.
It depends on the severity. If you feel severe dehydration, nausea and severe blistering, you need medical help. Often the effects of Sunburn aren't felt until 5 -6 hours after exposure. Cool the skin down with a cool flannel, ideally the cool water should have a couple of drops of pure lavender in to help reduce inflation, cool skin and help with Beads factory. Calamine lotion also helps to reduce itching and the irritation that accompanies it. Pure aloe vera (not perfumed) hydrates and cools and nourishes the skin. Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen help reduce inflammation. Stay out of the sun until the blistering has healed and no other symptoms remain.
Keep covered in the sun. Wear a sun screen every day, including the winter months. If you have sun damage on the face and neck area wear at least a broad spectrum SPF 25 daily. Exfoliate gently.
Some people opt for 'chemical peels' to remove the layer of skin cells including top layer of brown spots. Glycolic acid is an active ingredient that removes several layers of dead cells. Other treatments include Botulinum toxin type A, dermabrasion, intense pulsed light therapy. Generally these would only be available privately.
A natural approach would be to use natural exfoliators such as jojoba beads and ground apricot kernel .Face oils will help as they tend to be omega rich in oils so nourish and protect the skin whilst you sleep if used at night when the skin is not exposed to UV light and environmental pollutants
Superfoods are just as important to feed your skin from the inside so Omega 3, 6 & 9 oils, lots of fruit, vegetables, lean protein all help to restore the lusture to skin. Supplements may help depending on age and overall health and eating habits.
